Changing of the Guard
Humans born of blood and tears
The fruit of Mother Earth
Wander over this spinning globe
Forgetting their common birth
Those living through troubled times
Wonder why life has to be so hard
Living with the fear and uncertainty
That comes with the changing of the guard
Despots leave destruction in their path
Leaving souls and psyches scarred
Noble knights who kept up the fight
End up with their reputations marred
Run out of town on a rail
After being feathered and tarred
Were things ever as bad as this
Before the changing of the guard?
Politicians double down
On the hustles they concoct
Like drowning rats on a sinking ship
They’re all trying to make it to the top
When they get there they find no escape
Just like inmates in a prison yard
The only thing that they can hope for
Is the changing of the guard
Honest civil servants
Once safe behind castle walls
Are persecuted by the One-Eyed Jack
Who rages against them all
Do you think they have a play
When they’re lacking their Trump card?
Perhaps they can ask for an unmarked deck
At the changing of the guard
Attorneys battle for their kings
Just like nights of yore
Although honor and chivalry
Are not followed anymore
While they construct their ignominious defense
Will they find themselves dis-Barred?
Perhaps we'll learn the answer to that question
At the changing of the guard
I was in the garden and the phrase 'Changing of the guard' popped into my head. I seemed to remember that it was a Dylan song, but I decided to write my own. So this is my Dylan song. I didn't know the original well enough to steal from it - but the chords are like the ones from 'My Back Pages'. When I showed Gantt the lyrics, that's what popped into his head right away, too. But Peter's guitar kind of takes it to another place, so it feels like its own song now. But come sue me anyway, Bob - I need the publicity!
