As a small child, Alex Thuronyi would sooth his wounds by sitting in a rocking chair, crying, and singing songs. (He remembers two patriotic songs he used to sing, one American, one Russian). Now, at age 58, through a collection of songs he wrote over the years, Alex still uses song to process his world-weary blues, with themes touching on personal tragedies, joys and aspirations, sharing his unique perspective, expressing his truth, and exercising his humanity. Life with his wife Laura and son Peter are at the core of this collection, as are the dreams, fantasies and musings which percolate through his brain. Gantt Kushner of Gizmo Recording just a few blocks away in Silver Spring, Maryland, calls Alex a ‘one-man garage band.’ The music runs the gamut from folk-rock, blues, country, with some jazz shadings here and there, and even an occasional foray into psychedelia. Son Peter supplies his consummate skills as a session side-man on a number of songs, most notably the bluesier tracks, as well as some random tracks throughout . Atalie Fischer provides a violin solo on ‘Take It Easy’, and Gantt jumps from behind the curtain and throws down some baritone guitar on ‘Joseline.’ The 18 songs in this collection will take you through a journey of passion, transformation, and, hopefully, self-redemption. I hope you enjoy the ride as I have.
